How to Apply for an Emergency Passport in Jamaica (2025 Guide)

0

Need to leave Jamaica in a hurry but your passport is lost, damaged, or expired? Don’t panic — you may qualify for an Emergency Passport. This 2025 guide breaks down how to apply, who qualifies, and how fast you can get it issued through PICA (Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency).

What Is an Emergency Passport?

An Emergency Passport is a short-term travel document issued by PICA for urgent, unavoidable travel. It is valid for only one trip and usually has a limited validity (e.g. 6 months).

When Can You Apply for One?

You can apply if:

  • Your passport is lost or stolen and you have to travel urgently
  • Your passport is damaged or expired and you can’t wait for regular processing
  • You’re dealing with a medical emergency, death in the family, or critical business abroad

Step 1: Visit or Contact PICA Immediately

Emergency passports are only issued in person through PICA. Go to the head office or nearest regional office.

  • PICA Head Office: 25C Constant Spring Road, Kingston 10
  • Phone: (876) 754-7422
  • Website: www.pica.gov.jm

Step 2: Bring the Required Documents

Have these ready for faster processing:

  • Valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, voter’s ID, etc.)
  • TRN (Taxpayer Registration Number)
  • Proof of emergency (e.g. airline ticket, medical letter, death certificate, etc.)
  • Two certified passport-sized photos
  • Completed passport application form (adult or child)
  • Police report (if your passport was lost or stolen)

Step 3: Pay the Emergency Passport Fee

As of 2025, the cost to apply for an emergency passport is:

  • JMD $15,000 (flat fee)

This is higher than a standard passport because of the speed and urgency involved.

Step 4: Processing Time

Emergency passports are typically processed within:

  • 1–2 working days (sometimes same day if extremely urgent)

Important: PICA has full discretion over approval. You must prove the urgency of your situation.

Step 5: Collecting Your Emergency Passport

You must pick it up in person. Bring your receipt and a valid ID.

Note: Emergency passports may have only one or two pages and can’t be used for multiple trips.

Can You Use an Emergency Passport for All Countries?

Not always. Some countries require a full passport for entry. Always check with the embassy of the destination country before traveling.

Tips for Success

  • Call PICA ahead to confirm eligibility and prepare documents
  • Be calm and clear about your emergency situation
  • Bring original documents and copies to avoid delays
