Thinking about applying for a gun license in Jamaica? Whether you’re a business owner, security professional, or private citizen seeking protection, the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA) oversees all legal firearm licensing in the country. This 2025 guide walks you through the process step-by-step, including eligibility, required documents, fees, and what to expect during your application.

Who Can Apply for a Gun License in Jamaica?

Not everyone is eligible. The FLA has strict requirements. You must:

  • Be a Jamaican citizen or legal resident
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have no serious criminal convictions
  • Demonstrate a valid reason (e.g. business risk, personal security, farming, etc.)
  • Be mentally and physically fit to own and use a firearm

Step 1: Visit the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA)

The process starts at the FLA Head Office or a satellite branch. You can get the official application form and guidance there.

FLA Main Office:

  • 91A Old Hope Road, Kingston 6, Jamaica
  • Phone: (876) 927-5159
  • Website: www.fla.gov.jm

Step 2: Complete the Application Form

You will need to complete the Application for Firearm User’s License and submit it in person along with several required documents.

Step 3: Pay the Application Fee

As of 2025, the non-refundable application processing fee is:

  • JMD $8,000 – $10,000 (subject to change)

This does not include additional costs such as medical evaluations or training.

Step 4: Attend a Firearm Interview & Home Inspection

The FLA will schedule an interview with you and conduct a home inspection to determine if you can securely store a firearm.

  • They will assess your reason for requesting a firearm
  • They may inspect your safe or storage area
  • You may also be asked follow-up questions based on your application

Step 5: Firearm Safety Training & Proficiency Test

You must complete a Firearm Safety and Use Training program at an FLA-approved facility. After training, you’ll take a written test and practical shooting assessment.

  • Only applicants who pass the test will move forward in the licensing process

Step 6: Wait for FLA Approval

After all steps are completed, your application will go before the Firearm Licensing Review Board. They will make the final decision.

  • Processing time: 2–6 months depending on your case

Step 7: Receive Your License and Purchase Firearm

If approved, you will be issued a Firearm User’s License. You will also get a permit to purchase a firearm and ammunition from an approved dealer.
