Need a Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN) for your child? Whether it’s for opening a bank account, registering for school, or accessing government services, every Jamaican child needs a TRN. This 2025 guide walks you through the process of applying for a child’s TRN — step-by-step.

Step 2: Provide Supporting Documents
You must submit the following:
- Child’s original birth certificate (must be the Jamaican-issued version)
- Parent or guardian’s valid ID (passport, voter’s ID, driver’s licence, etc.)
- Letter of guardianship or court order (if applicable)
Step 3: Submit Documents In-Person
Bring all documents and the completed form to the tax office. They will verify your identity, scan the documents, and process the TRN.
Note: No fee is required to apply for a TRN.
Step 4: Receive the TRN Slip
In most cases, the TRN will be issued the same day. You’ll receive a printed slip with the number.
- This slip acts as proof of TRN — keep it safe!
- You may apply later for a plastic TRN card, but it’s optional.
Can I Apply for My Child’s TRN Online?
As of 2025, you must apply in person at a TAJ office for children under 18. Online TRN applications are only available for adults.
Why Does a Child Need a TRN?
There are many situations where a child may need a TRN:
- To open a savings account or youth bank account
- To receive government benefits (e.g. PATH)
- To register for high school or apply for scholarships
- For court proceedings or inheritance matters
Lost Your Child’s TRN?
If the slip is lost, you can request a TRN reprint at any TAJ location. Bring the same documents used for the original application.
Tips to Keep in Mind
- Make photocopies of all submitted documents
- TRN never expires — it remains valid for life
- Apply early if you know you’ll need it for school or financial purposes
